Inpatient Program · Ages 6 to 17

When a child or teenager is in a mental health crisis, families need answers fast – and they need to feel certain that their child will be safe, seen, and cared for by people who understand young people. The Thrive Child/Adolescent Mental Health Program at Hospital for Behavioral Medicine provides specialized inpatient psychiatric care for children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 who need a structured, supportive environment to stabilize and heal.
Our milieu is designed specifically for young people. Treatment is developmentally appropriate, evidence-based, and built around the individual needs of each child, with the family or caregiver at the center of the process.
Who This Program Is For
This program is for children and adolescents who are experiencing a mental health crisis or significant behavioral health symptoms that cannot be safely managed at home, in school, or in an outpatient setting. If you are a parent or guardian who is frightened about your child’s well-being, trust that instinct. You do not have to wait until things get worse to call us.
Your child or teenager may need this level of care if they are experiencing:
- Suicidal thoughts, statements, or behaviors, including a recent attempt or gesture
- Self-harm, including cutting or other self-injurious behaviors
- Severe depression, persistent sadness, or withdrawal from people and activities they once enjoyed
- Significant anxiety, panic attacks, or intense fears that are interfering with daily life
- Mood instability, explosive anger, or emotional dysregulation that is escalating
- Psychosis, including hallucinations, disorganized thinking, or paranoia
- Bipolar disorder or significant mood episodes
- Trauma-related symptoms, including PTSD
- Behavioral changes that are sudden, severe, or putting them or others at risk
If you are unsure whether your child needs inpatient care, our clinical team can help you figure that out. A free, confidential assessment is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – no appointment or referral needed.

A Note for Parents and Guardians
We know that making this call is one of the hardest things a parent can do. You may feel uncertain, scared, or unsure whether what your child is going through is serious enough to warrant this level of care. Please know that reaching out is never the wrong decision.
Our team is here to listen, assess, and help you understand what your child needs, without judgment. Family involvement is not just encouraged in our program; it is built into the treatment model. You will be kept informed, included in treatment planning, and supported throughout your child’s stay.
